Today we spent some time visiting the bulk carrier Glorious Sunrise, which was transporting grain today, and the vehicle ship Triton Ace. We always enjoy when our visits have a combination of both Apostleship of the Sea volunteers and Mission to Seafarers volunteers.

Visit to the Hospital]]>https://www.wellingtonseafarerscentre.org.nz/single-post/2018/03/19/Visit-to-the-Hospitalhttps://www.wellingtonseafarerscentre.org.nz/single-post/2018/03/19/Visit-to-the-HospitalTue, 20 Mar 2018 02:08:00 +0000
Seafaring is a dangerous occupation. Last week a seafarer lost half of his thumb due to a freak accident that occurred while his ship was coming into port. Since then he's been in the hospital here in Wellington while they've been reattaching his thumb. We found out he was without a proper suitcase, so we went out and bought him a brand new one to make sure his trip home went as smoothly as possible. We try our best to make sure the seafarers who are injured or sick in Wellington are well taken care of and get the things they need.

We visited MV Kota APL over the weekend while they were in port in Wellington. Kota APL is one of the many ships that has a diverse crew from around the world. Nationalities on board include Indonesian, Sri Lankan, Indian, Latvian, Polish, Chinese and Singaporean, just to name a few. After our visit Romeo was able to give the captain a ride into the city and show him a bit of Wellington.

Romeo, our ship welfare visitor, and Peter, one of our Apostleship of the Sea volunteers visited the two ships in port today, bulk carrier Oak Harbour and container ship Harrier Hunter. Even though our centre is currently out of commission our staff and volunteers still bring the resources of the centre to seafarers directly onboard their ships.
